On the 19 February 1985, 13 million viewers settled down in front of their televisions to watch the BBC’s bold venture into the world of soap opera.
EastEnders, which began as a twice-weekly programme, based its fictional community on people living in the East End of London.
Nowhere could it be more scrutinized than a pub on the Isle of Dogs where the BBC’s Breakfast Time went to gauge what locals thought of the make-believe world of Albert Square.
